PROJECT: BURIED SAND FILTER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS
PROJECT: COLLECTION SYSTEM IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
OWNER: ONTEORA CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT
ENGINEER: PRATORIUS AND CONRAD
LOCATION: ONTEORA HIGH SCHOOL
VALUE: $281,801.50
VALUE: $83,134.00

SCOPE OF WORK:
  • Projects involved installing a 100ft x 200ft buried sand filter system over the existing system to accommodate the increase in sewage flows due to both elementary and high school being tied into one system. The collection system involved 1700ft of 8” sdr 35 pipe with 10 manhole installations to tie elementary school into new sand filter.
  • Both projects were started once school was out for summer. A full time inspector and DEP were on site at all times monitoring progress and inspections. Deadline was tight, 45 days for collection and 90 days for sand filter. 2 separate crews were required to meet this deadline. Once collection system was completed, both crews combined to finish sand filter system and deadlines were met.
  • Upon completion of collection system, a pressure test and a mandrel test was performed on the new 8” sewer line and manholes were tested for leaks. System was then tied into existing septic tank and operational
  • At the same time we prepared area for new sand filter system, installed a 6ft high chain link fence around area for security, stripped and stockpiled topsoil, removed existing manholes and graded area to the required elevations.
  • This sand filter was designed to be self contained and therefore called for a 30mil liner to be installed on bottom and sides, all piping, stone and filter sand to be placed within. All piping which penetrated liner had pipe boots installed and solvent welded to liner to insure no leakage.
  • There was a total of 4 independent systems, each 50ft x 100ft that alternated with each other but a single collection system for all 4. A pump station with 4 individual pumps was installed and a control panel with alternating relays switches were used to accomplish this.
  • 2 Manholes were installed for cleanouts in the force mains and 2 collection manholes to discharge the water into the existing sewage treatment plant. Pressure tested and performed a test run on entire system, plugged and filled existing manhole to take old system off line. New system was then tied in and put into operation.
  • Topsoil, seeded and mulched entire area and removed temporary fence upon completion of project.
